Welcome to my blog. I realize that I'm not the first police chief to start using a blog to communicate with local residents, and I'm hoping Houstonians will forgive me for being a little late to the game.
I plan to use this forum as a tool to let you see some of the "behind the scenes" good work done by the men and women of the Houston Police Department … the kinds of things you aren't likely to see on the news. As you probably realize, the news media doesn't always show you the positive stories … and at HPD, there are lots of good, positive things going on. Despite the headlines, violent crime is down, and, for its size, Houston is a safe city. And there are things you can do, in partnership with HPD, to make it even safer. I encourage you to check this site periodically because I'm hoping to show you how you can help make a difference in your neighborhood and this city.
For starters, HPD could really use your help as a volunteer. We have several programs that might interest you: Citizens Offering Police Support (where you can work in a variety of jobs and divisions here at HPD), Citizens On Patrol, Houston Citizens' Police Academy, and the Police and Clergy Team (PACT). For more information on these and other volunteer programs, see this page of our Web site.
Thanks for visiting. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Harold L. Hurtt
Chief of Police

Welcome to the Blogoshere Chief! I think this will be a great way to communicate with your internal and external stakeholders. I hope you like the layout, your webdesigners worked very hard on getting it up and running with a professional image. We will officially announce it on Tuesday, November 13th.
All the Best,
Bruce
Thank you for inviting the general public for a behind the scenes look into the HPD Chief! The news really doesn't do the department "justice". Thank you for helping turn the HPD into a more professional organization! I'm proud to call Houston my hometown, and will check your blog frequently!
Good to see you blogging Chief...I just hope you don't steal away all of the Insite readers. Anyway, I will definitely check you out everyday to see what you're writing about and what I can eventually rip off for the Insite. Welcome to blog world...Remember develop thick skin because I've learned this is a forum where people will say exactly what they feel...

No doubt it took tons of time to add a new HPD banner image to the stock blogger template:

Anyway, welcome to the local blogosphere, Chief.
Your web designers might want to post a commenting policy, so commenters will know the moderation rules and such.
Thank you for participating in this blog Chief. Like a previous post, I'm also proud to call Houston my hometown and feel that Houston is a unique city. HPD is also unique among police agencies and I have always liked the uniforms that tend to "stand out" from the other agencies in the area. The question is, why is the agency considering on changing the color of HPD uniforms? ... Back the BLUE! (or will it be some other color?)
I think this is a great idea and a good way to reach the community. Looking forward to reading your blog in the near future Chief!
I'm excited about the behind scenes glance at what's going on with HPD. I can't wait for an update.
Thanks for some insight into the real stories from HPD
Watch out, won't be long before the liberal cop-haters hear about this and start flaming the site. Glad to see that there is a place to hear about the GOOD things that the police do for us, instead of being stuck with the "that mean old, racist cop mistreated me" stories that the Barnacle likes to flash.
Capt. Williams strikes again.
Welcome, Chief.
Chief Hurt, one issue I really hope you'll address in the future is your residence. From my understanding, you actually live in Phoenix and 'commute' into Houston each week. If you do address this in future, which I really hope you do, I'd like to know how a person who is not really a member of the community and who will very likely be away during some crisis periods can make for an effective chief of police. I look forward to you addressing this issue. I wish you and your department all the best, especially safety to those who protect us each and every day.
What a hoax this site is! Why don't you publish ALL the comments as long as they are not obscene? Moderated?! No, scrubbed to remove ALL comments except from the brown-nosers.
I would love to see the un moderated posts that might not be so kind to the chief. Will this be possible? Will this get posted?
I would actually really like to see HPD officers have new uniforms. I think a change might help with the public's perception of a changing department.
You've got a place for comments here... are you going to answer any questions, too?
I am putting this on my RSS stream reader and hoping to know more about the day-to-day life of the the chief and the HPD.
Thanks for inviting the public to be participants in this.
Nice work, Chief! I hope you post regularly. Have you ever thought of participating in this?

I figure if San Jose and Washington DC can do it, why not Houston?
I simply checked in to get your email address and found your blog. How exciting to see a Chief taking a quantum leap to embrace his community! Though I moved to San Francisco just after you came to Phoenix PD, I strongly support your efforts in community policing. I am an alumni of Valley Leadership and the Arizona Regional Community Policing Institute, so I understand the significant efforts and values of this philosophy.
With great respect and best wishes,

I'm glad the city of Houston didn't spend a lot of money on some expensive custom blog. However, it's kind of silly for "Bruce" to take credit for a lot of "hard work" on a professional image... It's only the free blogger layout that thousands of others use too.
The dark blue looks better. Make the change!
Change to the dark blue!
Safe city for its size? Does that count the 3 people executed and burned in their home last week?
Actually, thank you for patrolling the Eastex so heavily for criminals who might go 65 mph or faster. Feeling safer already...and those redlight cams are sending the criminals running!
Say, chief, what is your position on Houston being a "Sanctuary" city, providing amnesty for illegal immigrants? Do you think its a wise idea? Do you support it?
What's your take on SafeClear...you know, I was side swiped by a tow truck barreling down the shoulder at about 50 mph a couple months as the driver was racing another truck through bumper to bumper traffic to a wreck...the guy didn't even speak english...gosh that was a nice day! I guess SafeClear=FreePass at all costs to get that wreck off the road!
Hey, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to sound off. Bet this doesn't make it on the blog!
Dittos to the Chief's welcome comments.
I am the HPD Northwest Patrol Division Positive Interaction Program, PIP Coordinator. The PIP is a proactive positive interaction police partnership with the public designed to assist the community in taking ownership of their neighborhood crime problems. More importantly though, is taking ownership of the crime solutions by the community stakeholders. Crime Prevention, Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and neighborhood quality of life issues can be positively impacted through the volunteer efforts of Houston residents. Many volunteer oppotunities are available to those who want to make a difference in their own neighborhood. Take the time to volunteer in your PIP. If you do not have the time make the time to make a difference.
