RESPONDING TO A FEW OF YOUR COMMENTS

Thank you, Houston, for your interest in my blog. Within just a few days, I've received quite a few comments.

First, I want to give you a bit more information about our moderation policy and criteria, as suggested by Kevin Whited in his comment. Here is my policy to help guide you in providing comments most likely to be published.

Since open and transparent communications are the primary goal of this blog, we will publish many thoughtful reader comments, whether they are negative or positive, while striving to keep the blog as readable and useful as possible. I may address them in the body of my post, or with a quick response underneath your original comment.
Your comment may not be published if it:

  • duplicates other comments. (We'll usually post the most comprehensive comment when there are several comments on one topic.)
  • contains inappropriate language. (swearing, name-calling or hateful language)
  • contains language that could be construed as character assassination, libel or slander.

Remember, though, if you need police service or have an issue that must receive a response, you should contact the department in a more traditional manner. This page of our Web site lists our phone numbers, our mailing address, our station addresses, and should help you find the best way to contact us.

Next, I'd like to address Peter's concern that I have been commuting from Phoenix to Houston each week since my appointment as Houston police chief. I do not commute from Phoenix. I live here in Houston and have since February 2004. When I first moved here, I did make trips back to Phoenix, as I think most folks do when they move to a new city. But now, Houston is my home.

We have no current plans to change the HPD uniforms.

We recently received some $24 million to use for overtime while we continue to bring the department's personnel level to the point that will provide the safety and security Houstonians need and want. That is our current focus and I intend to insure that our financial assets remain focused on achieving that most important goal.

Thank you again for your interest and your input. I wish each and every one of you a safe and memorable holiday season.

Regards,

Harold L. Hurtt
Chief of Police

Chief,

Since the bond for the new joint city/county jail did not pass, what is the plan to to close the run-down central jail.

Someone told me last weekend that Chief Hurtt's wife was employed by Taser, Inc. and that she and the Chief hold stock in the company. Is this true?

Although the bond proposal failed, both the county and the city are committed to moving forward with consolidating their jail systems. - Chief Hurtt

My wife is not employed by Taser. And we do not hold stock in the company. Feel free to contact Taser, Inc. and ask them. -- Chief Hurrt

Why do you allow volunteers to bend the handicapped parking law? Maybe you don't understand how important those precious and few spaces and even fewer ramps are. My husband spent the last 5 years of his life in a chair and I have my own blue placard. I have comtacted everyone from HPS to the City Council and the violating company, UPS. In a way it's a good sign because it means that all these people I've contacted have not been touched by a tragedy. If they had, they would move heaven and earth to see it doesn't happen again. Thanks for the vent. I don't espect any results but feel better

To whom it may concern,

I have been trying to file a police report for the last 3 days. I can’t get past someone telling me the department will call me back. I rec’d one call at a time I could not get to the phone, yet I had my cell phone (the second number I provided) in my hand and it didn’t ring. I lost an entire booth & its contents at the Quilt Market on October 27. Due to AEX’s incompetence and neglect in notifying me, and the lack of response from the police department, I am almost a full month past the time my property was stolen and chances of recovery and diminishing. I have sent the following email out to all consumers at Market and need the Houston Police Department to respond so that I can file my report. I would appreciate a response.

Thank you,

Kay M. Capps Cross

Hello Everyone!

I am writing to request your help. I packed up my booth #2351 on the last night of market and labeled everything and turned in my paperwork to AEX (the convention decorator). I remained in Houston for Festival, but sent my booth contents and all of my paperwork home. Since I wouldn't be able to fill orders in Houston, I packed all of the orders I wrote at Market in my shipment. I assumed they would be waiting for me when I got home.

I arrived home and my shipment had not yet arrived. When I phoned AEX to get tracking numbers, I was told that when AEX went to my booth to put their labels on my four packages, they were not in the booth. Sometime after 5:16pm my shipment disappeared. No call was made to me on October 27 so that I could return to the convention center and solve the mystery right then. AEX never called me.

In my shipment were my black & white checkerboard floor, my black drapes and table covering, all my booth equipment, and business supplies. I also had fabric, batting, and thread samples to be used for a quilt due in December. Of course my quilts were packed in my lime green suitcase. I had nine quilts in that shipment along with the most important items I lost - your market orders.

I am so very thankful that I didn't take any moola or credit card numbers for orders, so that is a relief, but I need your help to get your orders out to you. Please check your slips for an order from Cross Cuts. It will be either a small receipt with my business card stapled to it or an actual order form for your copy. If you could please check your paperwork and email or call me I am anxious to get your orders into your hands. It was a great market and I certainly don't want any of you to think I neglected to send your order. I appreciate your help with this. Without it, my business is lost.

This has been a devastating blow, but with your continued support I intend to survive this and keep designing and writing. Just to jog your memory, I do the black and white quilts with a zinger. If you see any of them out there, I sure do miss them and would love to have them back. The missing quilts are Lazy Logs, Sweet Liberty, Slaphappy, Walk the Line, Palms on Pooh Corner, Pepto Pines, Weaving Hope, Low-slung Tote, and Scrapbag.

I am glad that my friend Kimberly Einmo took some pictures of my booth. I am including two of them to remind you of what you might have ordered. Thank you again for your help with this. Hope to see you in Pittsburgh!

Breathe, Play, Enjoy,

Kay

p.s. I’ll be happy to forward a brochure or pictures of my missing quilts – just let me know!

I have reviewed your concerns regarding parking enforcement, particularly in handicap-accessible parking spots. Although Houston Police Officers are able to write citations for parking violations, the City of Houston’s Parking Management Division is charged with the enforcement of parking laws.

Your concerns can be directed to the Parking Management Division, which is under the General Services Department. The Parking Management Division’s Web site is www.houstonparking.org and you may file/submit a comment or complaint through their Contact Us page.

Parking Management also may be reached through their customer service line at 713-853-8100, or by calling Liliana Rambo, Assistant Director, at 713-853-8276.

Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention.

I received your comment regarding difficulties reaching a police officer via telephone to make a police report. Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention.

If you are in the Houston area, you may stop by any
police station or storefront to file a police report.

You may also file a police report online if the amount stolen is valued at under $5,000.

Your third option is to call our non-emergency dispatch center at 713-884-3131, and request an officer to be dispatched to your residence or business.

Chief Hurtt,

I had the pleasure of instructing one of your command officers in a recent class at the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration. Captain Mark S. Holloway's participation and insight contributed greatly to the class and certainly enhanced the reputation of the Houston Police Department among the international cadre of students who were attending. While I hope the course enhanced his knowledge base, his interactive approach and willingness to share his perspective created a much more effective learning experience for all of the attendees. Please extend my appreciation for his efforts and congratulations to you on developing such a highly qualified Command Staff at the Houston Police Department.
